The Dee Pirkei Avot Project

TDPAP Pirkei Avot (6:11)

We are honoured that Rabbi Leo Dee has written the idea for the final Mishna (6:11) of Pirkei Avot.

In the wake of such immense tragedy, a cherished memory inspired this project: Rebbetzin Lucy A”H and Rabbi Leo learning Pirkei Avot with their five children. The aim was for families to come together on a Friday night to learn one idea a week, discuss its relevance to life today and how we can tap into Jewish wisdom to better ourselves. In this way, we hoped that families across the world would be inspired by the essence of the Dee family, remember the extraordinary souls of Lucy, Maia and Rina and elevate their Shabbat table each week.

We launched this as a small project for our community, never dreaming of it reaching ten thousand families around the world, in seven different languages. The Dee Pirkei Avot Project falls as testimony to how special Am Yisrael is and how, as Rabbi Dee says, we feel each others pain as if it’s our own.

Whether you learnt one Mishnah or each week, we feel so genuinely honoured that you’ve been part of this project. We daven that our learning each week has been a tremendous Aliyah for the neshamot of Lucy, Maia and Rina and provided some comfort for Rabbi Dee, Keren, Tali, Yehuda and their extended family.

We also daven that, in light of the unthinkable tragedies that have occurred in Eretz Yisrael over the last two years, our learning has been for the zechut of those who have been tragically murdered, the safe return of our hostages, the refuah of those injured, the continued strength and bravery of our chayalim and the safety of all those in our homeland of Israel.

IYH a new cycle of The Dee Pirkei Avot Project will begin around Rosh Hashana (more details to follow)

Thank you so much for being part of this project ❤

This week’s idea on Mishna 6:9 is written by Mori Sokal. Mori made Aliyah with her family in 2006. She has a Masters degree in special education and has been teaching in both elementary and high school for many years. Mori likes to give an occasional shiur in the weekly women’s learning group that Lucy ran in Efrat, and also writes a blog for Times of Israel about life here with its many challenges and blessings.

In Mori’s words: “It is an honor to add to this beautiful collection of learning in honor of Lucy, Maia and Rina. Lucy was my close friend and a shining example of values such as putting effort into work, taking time for others (especially her family and students), and helping her friends feel seen, heard, and valued. I encouraged Lucy to work at my school, but it was our school that was blessed by her presence, wisdom and caring. Today is Yom Hazikaron for chayalim and victims of terror, so it is especially meaningful to bring something positive to the world in the name of the Dee family, who have been a shining example of light in dark times. May we all hear besorot tovot soon in merit of our learning.” 💙

We wish everyone a wonderful Shabbat and an enjoyable Pesach as we daven for the final redemption with the coming of Moshiach!

Our hearts and minds are also with the Dee family as we mark the second yahrzeit since the passing of Lucy, Maia and Rina on the second day of Pesach. We daven that the neshamot of these three incredible women are continuing to be elevated by the wonderful legacies that continue to be perpetuated.

This week’s idea on Mishna 6:6 is written by Laura Sykes who was raised in Dublin “by the most committed and giving parents who instilled a deep love of both learning and living a Jewish life.” Now living in London, Laura and her family have been engaging with the Dee Pirkei Avot project since the start, enhancing their Friday nights with family discussion on the mishnayot. She was inspired and encouraged by her children to be an active participant in the project and share her ideas this week.

This week’s idea on Mishna 6:2 is written by Judy Keiner, who had the good fortune to grow up in a Yiddish speaking household in the heart of the postwar East End of London, where she was given the priceless treasure of a Jewish upbringing by her Galitzianer refugee parents. She learnt modern Hebrew on a totally secular English Kibbutz and from her secular relatives in 1960s socialist Israel and was stunned to realize that this enabled her to understand most of the Siddur and the Machzorim as she began to return to Torah learning in the 1970s. She spent most of her professional life training teachers and helping schools, including Jewish schools, improve. She has recently been involved in analyzing the way the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is being taught in English schools.

Having made Aliya 5 years ago, she and her husband are currently on a 2 year shlichut in Melbourne Mizrachi. She knew the Dees as a couple on the English rabbinic circuit and was always struck by their enthusiasm, their sincerity, their idealism, their intelligence, their sensitivity to others and their positivity. As Via says, “They radiated love of Torah, love of Israel and love of their fellow men – inspiring others to emulate them – like Aharon hacohen:

אוהב שלום ורודף שלום , אוהב את הבריות ומקרבן לתורה

The world lost a huge amount of light and goodness when Lucy, Maia and Rina were so cruelly murdered. Only Hashem knows the reason, but the way Leo and the family have dealt with their unspeakable loss has been inspiring all of us.”

This week’s idea on Mishna 3.4 is written by Brendi Waks. Brendi said, “Rabbi Leo and Lucy Dee were our Rabbi and Rebbetzin shortly after we arrived in Radlett. They made us feel very welcome and made themselves available to all members of our family, including through their toddlers’ group, women’s group, Bat mitzvah program, innovative and inclusive Tikun Leil Shavuot program, Friday night services, seudah rota and regular invitations for Shabbat lunches, all of which we partook of. Only after they left Radlett did I realize that, every week, they would each ask the Community Care Coordinator to provide them with a list of names of elderly or vulnerable members, all of whom they connected with. They were incredibly engaged and very inspiring leaders, with innovative ideas, lots of energy and a vision and genuine passion for changing the world and they were lovely to spend time with. It was this kind of individual connection they had with everyone that I believe left an indelible mark on our community, so it came as no surprise to me that this and other projects developed from seeds that Lucy planted.”

This week’s idea on Mishna 3.1 is written by Dalia Bornstein, cofounder of The Dee Pirkei Avot Project. Dalia and Maia were childhood friends when Maia lived in London. During their year in sem, Dalia and Libby were welcomed to the Dee’s home in Efrat where they participated in learning Pirkei Avot and discussed ways to incorporate the principles into their lives.

As we enter into the third of six chapters of Mishna Avot we want to invite those who may not have participated in a while to use this as an opportunity to begin learning with us again.

At a time when Am Yisrael is in such need, it is more important than ever that we take things on in the merit of all those fighting for our homeland, both on the battlefield and beyond. By engaging with this project, we are remembering Lucy, Maia and Rina Dee z”tl and coming together to keep their flames alive in this world.

At the end of this Perek, we hope to conduct an international Siyum online in which we will mark the halfway point in our learning journey together.

It is phenomenal to see and hear of the impact that learning a Mishna over Shabbat has on the lives of individuals across the globe.

As we enter into the new month of Tevet and the third chapter of Avot, let us unite as one.

As we enter into the festival of Chanukah and simultaneously finish the second chapter of Mishna Avot, we continue to pray that our learning is in the merit of Lucy, Maia and Rina as well as all those killed in the ongoing war. We also intend for our collective learning to serve as a zechut for Am Yisrael, especially all those in acute need of Hashem’s help. May the light of Chanukah and Torah such as this illuminate our lives and encourage us to grow together in the face of tremendous challenges.

TDPAP Pirkei Avot (2.8)

This week’s Pirkei Avot has an extra dimension. As well as continuing to learn leilui nishmat Lucy, Maia and Rina, it only made sense to dedicate this week’s learning to everybody who is in need of tefillot. As Rabbi Leo said, the Jewish people are one and we feel each others pain as if it is our own. It is true more than ever that the Jewish people are feeling each-others pain right now and that our hearts break for the hundreds of civilians and soldiers who have been injured, taken hostage and been murdered by Hamas. But unlike these terrorist who commit barbaric, unthinkable acts, the Jewish people unite in the darkest times to take the pain we feel and craft it into light. And so, we hope that families around the world will storm shamayim with their learning dedicated to our brothers and sisters.

This weeks idea on Mishna 2.8 has been written by Malka Hubscher, whom has been teaching in various seminaries and women’s learning programs in Israel for over 20 years.
